Can This Actually Be a Business?
Most people skip this question and spend months building something nobody wants to buy. This worksheet takes maybe fifteen minutes and could save you from a lot of confusing heartache later. It’s not here to talk you out of your idea, it’s here to help you figure out whether you’re building a business or an expensive hobby. Both are fine, but you should know which one you’re making.
You’ll start with a demand test, has anyone actually shown they want this with their attention, time, or money. Have you searched Etsy to see if it’s already selling. Have you asked five real people who aren’t your family. Is there a community already gathered around this interest. Then you move into sustainability, the actual math on how many units you’d need to sell to make it worth it, whether that number is realistic for your time and capacity, and what happens if your main sales channel changes overnight.
The last two parts get personal. Could you talk about this topic for thirty minutes without running out of things to say. Would you still want to make this after the hundredth order. Is this something you’d stick with even if it grew slowly for a year. It ends with a verdict, real business, side hustle, passion project, or an idea that needs refining first, plus the one thing you need to find out before you spend any money on it.
Two pages.
